Did you know ...

... that managed forests, thanks to their high proportion of young, strong, growing trees, enable CO2 to be extracted?

... that an old, unmanaged forest produces as much CO2 through processes of decomposition and decay as it stores, and that therefore an unmanaged forest contributes nothing to reducing global CO2?

Veneer Productions 2006

Although the forest contains 40,000 different species of wood-30% of the earth's surface is covered with forest, 10.5 million square miles of which are managed forests - there are only 600 species that can be used commercially. Of these, only 28 species cover around 75% of the industrial demand for wood, and then only a small amount of these can be utilized for veneer production.

Experience and Expertise

When it comes to producing Danzer veneers from a log there is one element you cannot do without: the human touch. No machine can ever replace people, their experience, their product knowledge, and their love for wood. The job of producing veneers from a tree begins with the selection of the right logs. Depending on the species and the log's external appearance, the expert must then decide how a log should be prepared for production. These decisions are not only important to the quality and value of the veneer, but also to get the best utilization of our precious raw material.

The consistently high quality and yield of Danzer veneers is also influenced by the proper cooking of the logs prior to cutting. This makes for a smooth cut and excellent color. Depending on the species and often influenced by the logs' region of origin, the length of the cooking time varies from only a few hours to over a week. The water temperature is also a very important variable which must be strictly controlled. If you overcook the wood, you usually get a rough cut. That is why all Danzer cooking schedules are computer-controlled to the minutest detail. Finally, experience also plays an important part in the cutting and drying process.

The cutting knife and bar must be sharp and well adjusted. Every Danzer plant has the most modern knife grinders which can put up to nine microbevels on a knife in order to assure a smooth cut but also maintains a durable sharpness throughout. All aspects of production are constantly and strictly monitored to assure constant perfect cutting and drying quality so as to earn the title of "Danzer Veneer."
